AAA, AA+ and AA are often used to describe the quality of the leather in a golf glove, but there is no international standard that determines exactly what the designations mean.
Two golf gloves can both be marketed as AAA and yet differ in material, origin, thickness, feel and durability. That is why Golfvante has chosen to publish its own, clear classification.
What does AAA mean?
AAA is typically used to describe very high quality leather. The term originates from tanneries' internal sorting of raw hides, where hides are classified according to, among other things, texture, smoothness, natural markings and usable surface area.
It is important to understand that AAA is not a protected or internationally standardized designation, so different manufacturers may use the same term in different ways.
Where do the designations come from?
Before a rawhide becomes a finished golf glove, it goes through several steps. One of the first is sorting.
The tannery examines, among other things:
- the structure of the skin
- fiber quality
- natural marks and scars
- the smoothness of the surface
- how much of the skin can be used
Designations like AA and AAA were originally used internally to distinguish different quality levels. They were not developed as a common quality rating for finished golf gloves.
Is there any international standard?
No. There is no common international standard that defines what AAA, AA+ or AA should mean for a finished golf glove.
This means that two manufacturers can use the same designation even though their gloves have different origins, different thicknesses and different properties. Therefore, it is not possible to compare two golf gloves based on the letters alone - which is precisely why we have chosen to be clear about exactly what our own designations mean.
What determines the quality of a golf glove leather?
Leather quality is determined by significantly more factors than the letter on the packaging.
Origin
Different regions produce leather with different properties. At Golfvante, Indonesian Cabretta leather is used in our highest-class models.

Dense and even fibers produce a strong leather with good flexibility. The fiber structure affects both the feel and how well the glove retains its shape.
Thickness
Thinner leather typically provides more direct contact with the club, but at the same time places higher demands on the quality and construction of the material.
Tanning
The tanning process affects softness, elasticity, moisture management and durability, among other things. Two similar rawhides can have different properties depending on how they are treated.
Finish
Dyeing, surface treatment and finishing affect how the leather feels, looks and ages.

To make the differences clearer, Golfvante uses a consistent classification across the entire range. The classification describes how we ourselves assess the origin, feel, thickness, finish and smoothness of the material - and we stick to that definition, regardless of what others in the industry choose to put in the same letters.

AAA
At Golfvante, AAA is only used for our finest golf gloves made from Indonesian cabretta leather.
To be classified as AAA, we set high standards for:
- Indonesian cabretta leather
- very thin construction
- exceptionally soft feel
- smooth and dense fiber structure
- high finish
- consistent quality between productions
Golf gloves' own quality level
AA+
AA+ is a classification developed by Golfvante to describe a level between AA and AAA.
We created AA+ because we were working with leathers that provided a playing feel close to AAA, but did not fully meet our highest standards. AA+ therefore provides very high feel and precision at a lower price than our AAA models.
Balance between feel and durability
AA
AA is our premium leather from Pakistan.
It combines good softness, high durability and a smooth playing feel. For many golfers, AA is the best balance between performance, durability and price.
What determines which classification a glove receives?
A golf glove is not classified based on a single characteristic. We weigh several different factors together:
- the origin of leather
- fiber structure
- softness
- thickness
- elasticity
- finish
- evenness
- game sense
- consistency between different productions
Leather quality is not the same as durability
A common misconception is that a higher rating, such as AAA, automatically means a glove will last longer in play than an AA glove. That's not how it works.

The classification describes origin, thickness and feel - not lifespan. Durability is governed by completely different factors.
Durability is determined by significantly more things than leather quality, for example:
- how the club is held in the hand - in the fingers or in the palm of the hand
- whether the glove is the right size and fit
- how often the glove is used and how it is stored between rounds
- care and maintenance over time
Example
One of the most common wear patterns is holes in the palm cushion. This occurs when the club grip moves against the glove during the swing - usually because the club is resting too much in the palm instead of over the fingers, or because the glove is too large and has loose material. This applies to all golf gloves, regardless of material or rating.
Is the Golf Glove classification an official standard?
No. There is no international standard that defines AAA, AA+ or AA for golf gloves.
The Golf Glove Classification is our own, publicly disclosed definition - and it's the one we consistently adhere to, regardless of what other manufacturers choose to call their products. We publish it to make it easier to understand the differences between our materials and choose the right golf glove.
